Unexplained Mysteries – Ancient Aircraft

Although different drawings of helicopters and winged flying machines were depicted in a number of Leonardo da Vinci’s early 16 th Century drawings, it has been recorded in most historical documents that man first started ascending into the air in large balloons around the 1780s.

However, some mysterious objects, including one resembling a flying machine were found within a tomb at Saqquara, Egypt, in 1898, and it was estimated by researchers that they were created around 200 BC. At the time, probably through ignorance, the objects were discarded and placed in a storage box marked wooden birds, and left in a storeroom at the Cairo Museum. Many years later the objects were rediscovered by Khalil Messiha, an Archaeologist and Egyptologist, and that led to the establishment of a scientific committee to study the objects. Messiha was convinced that the Saqquara Wooden Bird, made of sycamore wood with a 7.2-inch wingspan, was a model of an ancient flying machine, similar to a push-glider. He made a replica of the object, and although the original was missing a horizontal tail-plane, Messiha created and attached one to his replica, and it flew for a distance with very little hand effort. As a result, the original was placed on display in the museum and marked, early Egyptian model airplane.

There were many critics at the time that disputed Messiha’s claims, and suggested that it was just a child’s toy and had been modelled on a falcon or else it was a weather vane. However, Messiha continued to wonder how a civilisation some 2000 years earlier could create such an object with advanced aeronautical features, and mentioned that in ancient Egyptian times they always made scale models of objects or projects that they planned to create. Another archaeologist supported Messiha’s theory, suggesting that there might be some truth to the claims, citing the discovery of some ancient images found in Egypt.

In 1848, the images were discovered in the ceiling beams of a 3000-year-old Seti Temple at Abydos, several hundred miles south of Cairo. At the time of their discovery, the archaeological expedition team probably didn’t realise their significance, and it wasn’t until years later that an Arab newspaper published a series of photos of the hieroglyphics. The Egyptologist, Alan Alford visited Egypt and studied the Abydos drawings and confirmed that they were ancient images of helicopters, jet planes and submarines. In modern times, there is still disagreement amongst historians and scientists about the mysterious hieroglyphics, and some believe that the ancient Egyptians had knowledge of aeronautics but those secrets must have been lost over time. However, some secrets must have survived in some way as the information found its way to India, China and Latin America.

In the last few decades, archaeologists have discovered over 33 similar model airplanes in Columbia and Peru. However, it remains a mystery how the knowledge travelled to those distant countries, and even more puzzling is the fact that there is no explanation as to where the Egyptians obtained the knowledge in the first place.
