Unexplained Mysteries – Mysterious Mirrors
For centuries, mirrors have held a curious mystique. They have been imbued with an inexplicable relationship to magic, myths and legends. Through years of superstitious belief, they have often been regarded as a tool of the devil. They have even been thought of as a soul catcher for anyone gazing upon their own reflection too long.
Some myths have become part of traditions in the United States and Ireland. One such tradition occurs after a family member dies, where all the mirrors in the house are covered until the deceased is taken from the house. Covering the mirrors prevents the soul of the dearly departed from becoming trapped within the mirror.
One belief that seems to have been universally accepted is the superstition that one will be followed by seven years of bad luck after breaking a mirror. This superstition appears to have developed around the 16 th Century when the process of making mirrors from glass was developed.
In those times, the manufacturing of mirrors was very expensive. If a mirror was broken, it was estimated that it would take approximately seven years to save the money to replace it. Fortunately, there was a remedy to counter the bad luck should a mirror be broken. The remedy involved gathering all the broken glass and grounding into very small pieces until its reflective qualities no longer existed.
In the last few decades, researchers have made some startling discoveries amongst the peat bogs of Northern Europe that might have a relationship to the reflective images of mirrors. They have uncovered extremely well preserved bodies and artefacts buried in the bogs that date back to the Iron Age. The bodies have been almost perfectly preserved by the unique conditions of the bogs.
The bog people’s skin, although heavily tanned, remains intact because of the highly acidic water, cold temperature and lack of oxygen under the bog. The same conditions, however, have caused their bones to dissolve. The scientific community believe that the people and other artefacts were offered as sacrifices to their pagan gods.
It is possible the area was selected because of the reflective nature of bogs caused by the blackness of the peat. In those ancient times, before glass mirrors were invented, the people were probably captivated by the highly reflective nature of the bog’s water. Perhaps while gazing into the mirrored waters, they might have perceived the image of the reflective sky as another world, an entrance or a doorway to their Gods.
The mirror’s mysterious qualities were used by Leonardo Da Vinci, as he developed his unique style of backwards writing. He would write from right to left while at the same time reversing all the letters. When finished the text could only be read with a mirror. Leonardo incorporated his technique into his paintings by using mirrors. It is believed that through the use of mirrors, strange biblical images could be found or the reflected image could unlock mysterious secret codes within his paintings. Although many people take mirrors for granted, there are those who theorise that mirrors might hold the key to unexplained gateways into other mysterious dimensions.
